Johannesburg - Ten children with special needs were injured on Tuesday morning after their taxi crashed in the west of Johannesburg, ER24 paramedics said.
Spokesperson Russel Meiring said the accident occurred on the Doreen Road in Ruimsig.
He said when paramedics and fire services personnel arrived they found the taxi lying on its side in the left lane of the road. Meiring said the driver of the taxi was found trapped inside the taxi.
He appeared to have suffered moderate injuries.
“Rescue services had to use the Jaws of life equipment to free the driver from the vehicle, before he could be treated,” Meiring said.
Once freed, paramedics found that the driver was in a serious condition.
The occupants - children with special needs aged between 6 and 17 - had already climbed out of the vehicle and were seated on the pavement.
They had sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were treated on the scene, Meiring said. Paramedics provided the driver with advanced life support interventions, before all the injured were transported to Laratong Provincial hospital.
Meiring said it was believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a wall and overturn.
Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
