Twelve people were killed when their minibus collided head-on with a truck at an intersection in Vereeniging, south of Gauteng on Thursday, paramedics said.

“It is believed that both vehicles may have crossed over the intersection at the wrong time leading to the extensive impact of the head on collision,” said ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson.

The bus was carrying 13 passengers and only one person survived the accident.

Jackson said 10 passengers were killed on impact.

The truck driver was not injured.

“Two people had sustained critical injuries, and paramedics immediately started resuscitation efforts on the one, but sadly the accident claimed an eleventh life”

The second critical passenger was treated at the scene and taken to hospital where the person died shortly after arrival.

Paramedics said both vehicles were badly damaged. - Sapa
