Johannesburg - Two people were killed and 32 others injured in two separate taxi accidents in Benoni and Roodepoort on Monday morning, paramedics said.

In Benoni, two people were killed and 17 others injured when a taxi crashed through a wall on Birch Road, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“When paramedics arrived on the incident scene they found the taxi lying on its side wedged up against the wall,” he said.

“The two people who were trapped inside the taxi were freed by the fire department.”

The injuries of the 17 people varied from fractures to lacerations.

The injured were taken to hospital for further treatment.

In Roodepoort, 15 people were injured when two taxis collided on Main Reef Road.

“Paramedics from ER24 and City of Johannesburg assisted in stabilising the commuters of the two taxis that collided,” said Vermaak.

“They were thereafter transported to a nearby hospital.”
