Twenty people were trapped when the bus they were in plummeted off a bridge in Meyerton, in the Vaal Triangle, on Monday morning, paramedics said.

At least 85 people were injured in the crash on the R551, Verwoerd road, said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks.

“We have called for additional ambulances from outside this area to come and assist us. It seems we have around 20 people trapped inside,” he said.

The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which hit the rails of the bridge, then plummeted 10 metres to the ground, landing on its side.
