24 hours of mayhem on Joburg’s roads

Johannesburg - It was a bloody Spring Day on Joburg’s roads on Thursday.

Several taxi-related accidents left over 70 people injured, including children.

On Thursday night 18 people sustained minor to moderate injuries after a taxi rollover involving two other vehicles took place on Kliprivier and Bellairs Drive in Joburg South.

Emer-G-Med spokesman Maxwell Cohen said it's believed that the taxi skipped a red traffic light and collided with the black Audi, causing the taxi to roll and collide with a second car.

“The patients were treated on the scene before being transported to various nearby hospitals,” he said.

On Thursday afternoon an accident in Rosebank on the corner of Glenhove and Oxford Roads left 16 people injured after a taxi allegedly lost control, hit the pavement and rolled.

Cohen said patients treated sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Also on Thursday, another 16 people were injured when a taxi collided with two cars on Barry Hertzog avenue in Mellville.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find the taxi occupants seated on the pavement, others walking around. Fortunately all sustained only minor to moderate injuries,” Cohen said.

Another accident on Thursday morning involving a taxi and a school transport bus in Parktown left seven children injured.

“It's alleged that the taxi lost control at speed, resulting in the collision. Injuries sustained were minor to moderate,” he said.

Another crash on Thursday, this time in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, left two people with serious injuries and 12 others with minor injuries after a taxi rolled on corners of Rietfontein road and 3rd streets.

Netcare911 spokesman Chris Botha said the exact details of the cause of the accident were under police investigation

“Netcare911 paramedics worked alongside another emergency service on scene. All injured were transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care,” he said

* In KwaZulu-Natal, one person was killed after a car collided with a truck on the N3 Cedara in the Natal Midlands during the early hours of Friday morning.

According to Netcare911 spokesman Chris Botha, reports from the scene indicated that a car rear-ended a heavy motor vehicle but exact details were not yet known.

“Tragically, the man died before our arrival due to the extensive injuries that he sustained, the driver of the truck was not injured in the crash,” he said.

* In another accident on Friday morning, two people were injured after three vehicles collided in Umkomaas in KwaZulu-Natal. “One of the vehicles then overturned, its twisted frame then coming to rest on its roof in the roadway.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that two people sustained moderate injuries,” Botha said.

* Another crash on Friday morning, this time on the M13 in Pinetown, left one person seriously injured. According to Botha, when paramedics arrived at the scene and found the driver still trapped in the vehicle with serious injuries.

“The Netcare911 rescue officer used the Jaws of Life to free the injured man from the wreckage.

“Medics stabilised the patient at the scene before he was transported to hospital for the care that he required,” he said.
