Johannesburg - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and Johannesburg metro police stopped 45 buses between Kya Sands and Randburg on Saturday and found critical faults in 25 of them.

“The 25 buses, mostly Putco, had their license discs pulled and will have to be proved roadworthy before they can hit the streets again,” said RTMC spokesman Ashref Ismail.

“The most common defect that we found was the braking system and the service brakes were not in order,” Ismail said.

Several other vehicles did not have proper documentation, faulty headlamps, defective steering “as well as massive oil and diesel leaks” in the engine.

Two of the buses had to be towed back to the depot because they were in such a poor state.

Another 20 buses were issued with citations but did not have their license disks pulled.

“We want to indicate these blitz operations on passenger vehicles will continue indefinitely. They will focus on long distance coaches, luxury buses, commuter buses, minibus taxis metered taxis and most importantly learner transport,” Ismail said. - Sapa
