Johannesburg - Twenty-seven school children were injured in an accident in the Diepsloot area on Tuesday, the Gauteng education department said.

The pupils were being transported to various schools in the area by private transport, the department said in a statement.

All 27 were taken to Tembisa Hospital.

So far, 24 pupils had been discharged from the hospital.

“We are interacting with the hospital management and management of various schools with a view of providing assistance where necessary,” the department said.

“We wish all these learners a speedy recovery and hope that they will be back at school soon.”

Paramedics said earlier 24 pupils and an adult were injured when the minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N14 near Malibongwe Drive in Nooitgedacht.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said the 25 had moderate to minor injuries.

The cause of the accident was being investigated by police.
