Johannesburg -
Seven people were killed and nine others were injured on Sunday evening when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N14 South, near the Jean Avenue/Centurion offramp, Tshwane emergency services said.
Spokesman Johan Pieterse said that seven people were declared dead on the scene, while two were critically injured and three were seriously injured.
Tshwane metro police spokesman Snr-Supt Isaac Mahamba said two of the seriously injured patients were children aged under five years.
Pieterse said another four people sustained minor to moderate injuries.
Some lanes of the N14 in the vicinity of the crash were closed to traffic while clean up operations continued.
Mahamba said that it was believed some bystanders heard an unusual sound coming from one of the taxi's rear tyres before it overturned. They apparently tried to warn the taxi driver, to no avail.
Some debris from the taxi crash hit a bus travelling in the opposite direction. The windscreen of the bus was damaged but no one from the bus was injured.
Mahamba said the road was expected to be reopened by 10pm. - Sapa
