Johannesburg -

A man and a seven-month-old baby were kiled when a car knocked down a pedestrian on the N12 near the Lenasia offramp on Friday afternoon, paramedics said.

ER 24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said that when paramedics arrived the five occupants were still trapped in the car.

The pedestrian had fatal injuries and was later declared dead on the scene.

“Paramedics also found the seven-month-old several metres away from the vehicle. It is suspected that the child was flung through the windscreen of the vehicle during the collision,” Vermaak said in a statement.

“Sadly the baby sustained fatal injuries and was also declared dead on the scene. Another child with critical injuries was found trapped in the front seat of the vehicle.”

Vermaak said fire fighters had to use the Jaws-of-Life to free the child who was later stabilised on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital.

A woman sustained multiple fractures and possible head injuries. She was in a critical condition and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Two other people were treated on the scene for serious injuries and taken to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. - Sapa
