Johannesburg - The nursing college at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is failing in various areas, the YCL in Gauteng said on Tuesday.

“The problems at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College partly stem from failures in administration, management and governance,” said Young Communist League provincial spokesman Matankana Mothapo.

“This deteriorated to the extent that the Gauteng health department found itself embroiled in handling matters that are ordinarily handled by institutions of learning.”

The YCL said it welcomed the re-opening of the college on Monday after its closure by Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo last month.

Students at the college had protested in demand of the removal of certain staff members, and had alleged that they had been deliberately failed in 2010 and 2011.

Mothapo said the college's existing structures were failing to “keep pace with the times”.

“The YCL of SA therefore reiterates its call for the college to be realigned with the Higher Education Act.”

Gauteng health spokesman Simon Zwane said the department had noted the YCL's views. - Sapa
