Construction of the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station will begin in Pretoria on Tuesday, the city of Tshwane said.
The station will be in Arcadia Street, between Hilda and Grosvenor streets, across the road from the Gautrain bus station, spokesman Lulama Jezi said on Monday.
“The project will be done in two phases for four months and conclude at the end of October,” he said.
The sidewalk along Arcadia Street would be cordoned off for the road to be widened. Traffic would not be interrupted.
There would however be no parking or walkways between Hilda and Grosvenor streets during the first phase of construction.
“Streetlights will be relocated to the new sidewalk which will be under construction, and entrances to the buildings alongside Arcadia Street will not be affected.”
Traffic would be directed around the construction site and motorists would be expected to use the newly-constructed carriageways during the second phase of the project.
The BRT station would be at the centre of Arcadia Street, with a dedicated bus lane on either side. Motorists were urged to be vigilant and co-operative during the construction. – Sapa
