Johannesburg - A bus caught fire on 14th Avenue, near MTN's headquarters, on Thursday afternoon, Johannesburg emergency services said.

The bus was heading to Roodepoort from the Randburg area, said spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

“Passengers were evacuated and no casualties were reported.”

Mulaudzi said 14th Avenue was closed to traffic just after 5pm, and would remain closed for about an hour while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

He said traffic was backed up to Ontdekkers road and was also disrupted from Cresta and Randburg.

“Motorists need to be patient or use alternative routes.”

He said the cause of the fire was not known and would be investigated.
