Johannesburg - A six-year-old girl drowned in a flood in Lehae in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

The girl was on her way home from school on Friday afternoon when she was washed away by flood water, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

Her body was found on Saturday morning in a river, about 4km away from where she drowned.

An inquest docket has been was opened.
