Johannesburg - A 43-year-old metro policeman is in a serious condition in hospital after being knocked over while directing traffic in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, his colleague Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Thursday.

He was knocked over by a driver in a white Corolla while directing traffic at the “very busy” intersection of Main Reef and Elias Motsoaledi roads.

Metro police officer Azwindini Mavunga was taken to the Flora Clinic with serious head injuries, Minnaar said.

The driver would be the subject of an investigation into reckless and negligent driving, but was not arrested on the scene.

Minnaar implored motorists to be extra vigilant at intersections during peak traffic times for the officers directing the traffic flow. - Sapa
