Johannesburg - Both sides of the N1 freeway near the Buccleuch interchange are experiencing heavy traffic volumes because of an accident, the Johannesburg metro police department said on Friday.

Four people were injured when their cars were involved in a collision on the N1 south around 11am.

“The accident happened on the N1 south, but due to the impact one of the four cars was flung to the opposite side of the freeway,” Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The man who was in this car was severely injured. The other three sustained minor injuries. They were all taken to a nearby hospital.

“We can't confirm how the accident happened at this stage,” Minnaar said.

The matter would be investigated.

Minnaar urged motorists to use alternative routes such as the R55 or the Old Johannesburg Road.
