Johannesburg - When former president Nelson Mandela looked for assistance during the apartheid struggle, doors opened for him, AU chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Tuesday.

“Wherever he went on our continent, doors were opened,” she said.

“He got military training and he got support for the struggle during apartheid.”

During his presidency, he championed peace and security on the continent, she said.

He cemented friendships and relationships with the world.

“On behalf o the AU we express our sincere condolences to Ma Graca, Ma Winnie, the children, the grandchildren and entire Madiba family,” she said.

“Thank you for surrendering him for the service of humanity.”

Mandela hated oppression.

“Tata we thank you for your countless sacrifices.”
