Johannesburg - Convicted drug mule Tessa Beetge is expected to arrive in South Africa from Brazil on Thursday, East Coast Radio reported.

On Wednesday, the station said she would touch down in Johannesburg where she would be welcomed by her friends and family.

Her aunt Margie Olsen said they were looking forward to being with Beetge again and reuniting her with her children.

“At last we can see Tessie coming home tomorrow (Thursday) and that's going to be a joyous occasion. She is going to be a little bit overwhelmed, very anxious to see her children,” she said.

Olsen said they were glad that this painful chapter of her life was almost over.

“We are doing arrangements. Her children are living with their dad and step-mom. They are now 17 and 15, and they are beautiful girls and they're girls that Tessie is going to be extremely proud of,” she said.

“When Tessie left they were only 12 and 10. So she missed those beautiful teenage years.”

Beetge was caught with 10.2 kg of cocaine in her luggage at Sao Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport in 2008.

Her mother Marie Swanepoel died in an East London hospital in October after a short illness.

Beetge was recruited by Sheryl Cwele to smuggle cocaine from South America.

Cwele, the ex-wife of State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele, and her co-accused Frank Nabolisa were found guilty of drug dealing by the Pietermaritzburg High Court in May 2011.

The two tried to have their convictions overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2012, but instead the court increased their sentences from 12 to 20 years.
