Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni water was not contaminated as an electronic message to residents suggested, the municipality said on Tuesday.
“(We) wish to express concern about the unfounded accusations sent via electronic messaging to Ekurhuleni residents, claiming the existence of a bad bacterial virus in water supply to the Boksburg and Brakpan areas,” spokesman Sam Modiba said in a statement.
Modiba said residents got the misleading message through BlackBerry Messenger over the weekend.
“We want to assure residents (that) our water is clean and we want to distance ourselves from that message.”
He said if there were problems with the drinking water the municipality would have been the first to inform the residents about the problem.
“Actions have been set in motion by the municipality to trace the origin of this false messaging, with the intention of gaining evidence for possible prosecution.”
The municipality received the Blue Drop Status Award last year for the highest quality of drinking water.
The annual awards are made by the department of water affairs in order to build citizens' confidence on the quality of drinking water in the country.
Modiba said: “We have achieved this because we conduct frequent testing throughout the year, by a well-qualified and dedicated team.” - Sapa
