Johannesburg - A car driven by a 72-year-old man collided with a Gauteng traffic police vehicle on Thursday morning, the provincial community safety department said.

Spokesman Thapelo Moiloa said the man was speeding when he hit a traffic police car escorting road-marking vehicles on the Moloto road near Jakkalsdam. Both drivers suffered minor injuries.

A case of reckless or negligent driving was opened.

“It is disturbing that at this time of year we are experiencing motorists who do not only put the lives of other motorists in danger, but to themselves, all in the name of getting to their destinations on time,” Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko said.

She questioned how a motorist could collide with a marked vehicle that had its blue lights and hazard lights on.
