Johannesburg - A fire swept through four shops in the Johannesburg city centre on Wednesday morning, Johannesburg emergency services said.

The shops were in a building on Eloff and Plein streets, spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

The residences above the shops were not affected and no one was harmed.

“Most of the fire has been extinguished,” said Mulaudzi. The cause of the fire, which was reported at around 3am, was unknown.

On Monday, five shops, along Bree and Mooi streets, were damaged in a fire.

No one was hurt. Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the damage was extensive.
