Pretoria - A man's gangrenous foot was finally amputated below the knee after his lawyer spent three weeks trying to expedite the treatment, according to a report on Saturday.
Beeld newspaper reported that George Earle, 52, underwent surgery in the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria on Friday.
Earle was happy that the operation finally took place, his wife Cecilia told the newspaper.
It was an email to Mpumalanga's Health MEC that resulted in the treatment.
Earle's lawyer Johan van der Vyver had faxed and e-mailed a letter to MEC Clifford Mkasi,
Earle, a diabetic, had been waiting since December 22 for surgery in the Middelburg provincial hospital, apparently due to a shortage of anaesthetists.
