Johannesburg - Pedestrian accidents have been increasing around Gauteng, the community safety department said on Monday.

“Current accident... statistics indicate that there is an increase in pedestrian fatalities in major arterial routes which are situated next to informal settlements,” said spokesman Obed Sibasa in a statement.

“For example R59, Golden highway, N14, N12, N3, N1 south and many others.”

The department urged drivers to behave in a responsible manner, especially during the festive season, and refrain from speeding, reckless and negligent driving, drag racing, drunken driving and driving without a seat belt.

MEC Faith Mazibuko wished all motorists and road users in Gauteng a joyous and safe festive season.
