Johannesburg - Residents of Gauteng can breathe a sigh of relief as temperatures in the province are expected to improve towards the weekend.

Weather forecaster for the SA Weather Service Ransby Bulo said clear and cool conditions were expected to continue on Thursday with temperatures peaking in Joburg and Pretoria at 17 and 19°.

“Morning temperatures will still be cold over Gauteng; we will see negative numbers in the south and around zero to 1° in other parts of the province.

“Temperatures are taking a bit longer to warm up because of the snowfall in the country around KwaZulu-Natal and the Drakensberg; a cold wind is still blowing,” Bulo said.

He said weekend temperatures were expected to remain in the upper teens across the province.

“At this stage, no more rain is expected in the province over the next few days, however, there is a chance of showers for Sunday and temperatures will drop into the mid-teens.”

Regarding Tuesday’s tornado in Tembisa, he said tornadoes had happened in the country before, but didn't happen often in Gauteng.

“Tuesday’s tornado was caused by the cut-off low pressure system that started last weekend. It brought with it strong winds and hail which increased as the weather system intensified and this is what led to the tornado,” Bulo said.

He said tornadoes didn't last long but they did move quickly because of the high speed at which they turned.

“We see them in the eastern parts of the country like the Free State and the Eastern Cape as well.”
