The Gautrain again proved its reliability and efficiency when it beat a Maserati GranTurismo during a race that pitted 5fm’s breakfast team against its afternoon drive show team.

The race was part of a charity run organised by Menlyn shopping complex and The Zone @ Rosebank, where the two teams also had to do trolley runs to buy as many goods as possible for charities in 20 minutes.

The Maserati Gran Turismo left Hatfield Station just as the train departed but the car was soon stuck in traffic while the train made tremendous progress on the tracks.

By the time the train passed through Midrand, the car was still in Centurion where it was again stuck in traffic. It took the train 37 minutes to get to its destination while the vehicle could only manage to do it in 42 minutes.

Five minutes after the DJ Fresh team arrived at The Zone, the Maserati with the breakfast team pulled up to Liquid Chefs at The Zone Phase 2. The teams were welcomed by a marimba band.

DJ Fresh was highly impressed with the train and even compared it to those in the US and England.

“I have travelled on commuter trains abroad and the Gautrain is on the same level as them. It is clean and well organised. Commuting needs to be as clean as possible and I think they have achieved that,” he said.

Fresh recommended the train to business people and those always on their laptops as it provides the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax and push through deadlines before getting to the office.

Gareth Cliff, who was in the Maserati, was not very happy about “losing”. Cliff was impressed with the train and said the line should get busy from now on.

“It’s exciting that the line has opened and I think it will be very busy,” he said. - Pretoria News

As South Africans complaining is what we do best, sometimes for the sake of it! The message and hype is clear here to say that no matter howfast your car can be, but it will contend with normal city traffic, robots etc, hence you will never win against the train on the rail, period Even the 5 mins gap that Gareth managed to achieve was generous, so it was not really bad, one would have expected a lot more! @Bongo, I think you have a problem with the ANC govt, you can praise but to say NP left the country in good shape is insulting the intelligence of all S.Africans. You go on about them "messing up" everything, one would think nothing moves in SA, are you still breathing bro? There's a lot one criticise them for, e.g prioritising the elite Gautrain above a full comprehensive, affordable public transport is such a glaring error and many others. But the rest, you can exergerate man...its so nice driving on R21, I don't get it how they "messed" it, except for tenders to foreign companies?

To Ruan. The train is from the UK. Please do not show your anti-British bias and ignorance.

I have been on trains in the US. To say that Gautrain is comparable to US train is to be unkind. European and Asian trains are indeed great, but US trains are crap

The Gautrain is another sign of ANC's inefficiency in govt, the ANC has again messed up this beautiful country that the NP left in good shape. Was it not Gareth Cliff who not so long ago laid into Zuma and the ANC for "messing up the country"? Yes indeed whatever the ANC touches turns into s*#!t, just like they messed up the Rugby World Cup, the Afcon Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the all Africa Games, the Soccer World Cup, the BRT, peace efforts in DRC, Burundi, Sudan, Zimbabwe, RDP, indigent grants, I see they also messed up the R21 between Pretoria and OR Tambo Airport and they want to further mess-up by upgrading Metro-Rail etc.

Like all rail systems, the Gautrain is ultimately dependent upon its feeder system. Currently people not living or working close to the few stations are not able to effectively use it. I still see it as a white elephant and will only be convinced otherwise when the taxpayer is not asked to subsidise it.

Dear Fresh. Of course it will be clean. It's brand new! Duh! The train is also from France making it a tat better than the trains in the US and UK. Not sure I expected a different commment from Fresh though. Predictable!

As far as I am concerned, Gareth is not the "shock jock" he used to be , but still possibly has the best morning show on radio and as for fresh...well I think he needs to be replaced by Damone(spelling) I'd rather listen to Damone's voice than fresh...or maybe even Angie???...Use it don't use it....

From the time my friends and I arrived at the train stain I was already impressed with the security. When we bought our tickets the people there were so helpful and always full of smiles. The Gauteng train is the best so far here in South Africa.Security there for the Gauteng station is also the best.
