Gautrain services have been suspended yet again between Hatfield, Pretoria and Centurion due to cable theft, the SABC reported on Tuesday.

This was the second time in a month that services were suspended because of cable theft.

The multi-billion rand transport system would also not be operational between Sandton and Rosebank stations in Johannesburg due to water leakages.

According to the report, buses would ferry passengers to their destinations. - Sapa

classify any theft that disrupts industry or transport as sabotage with corresponding penalties which must include the scrap dealers, and the problem will disappear forever.

I have a strong suspicion its BEE companies that take down the cables and then hope win the contract to re install them. If its not that and cable theives I say every metal recycling company must be audited every month and any company that accepts copper wire be it electric cables or power cables, the owner must get life imprisonment. Simple no beating around the bush just a harsh sentence. Take away the demand and no one will steal.!!!!!

TO all those who enjoys talking n0nsense nonstop; All you have to do is; pack and leave, we’re not forcing you to be here and talk this r@bbish day-in-day-out. I cannot imagine some skinny malnourished glue smoking boys from the township pulling this one; maybe you m0rons should stop whining and come with solutions like WTF is doing, its tiring and getting pathet1c by a minute. This is great country and we should all be proud of what we have achieved in the small space of time. Crime is everywhere, especially the kinda of white-colar-crime crippling our economy and country. The gautrains needs to put security measures in place and get this f00ls and put them in their place. There is no theft here, it’s pure sabotage by some angry businesspolitical heavyweights. Let’s build a better country and stop whining, otherwise take your bags and head for London (clearly there is zero crime and looting there).

@ anonymous. admit it. south africa is a unique place with loads of potential. its just waiting for people to stop whinging and take responsibility for positive change. if sa is so bad, why do you still follow the sa news? also how do you measure success. a conspicuous consumer lifestyle based on piles of debt? not the sa way...

Why does government not pass legislation to ban scarp metal. Surely the loss of business caused outweighs the value of scrap metal industry as a whole. Having this legislation passed would bring an end to cable theft, man holes covers missing , car theft , etc ...

No problem. Archbishop Tutu's wealth tax will pay for new cables. The money that is left over from the "white tax" can be "appropriated" by the people in government who are entitled to "extra bonuses". (By the way: Did we not pay 2% extra tax plus 1% for the elections in the 1990's? What is new?)

We need a full public transportation network, including smaller taxis in town centres to support the rail and bus options & serve as alternatives (& to go beyond set routes)

maybe theres a light(or lack thereof) at the end of the tunnel(no pun intended). When the Tolls come into effect, the cables will be stolen as well and they wont work.... maybe cable theft should become a crime punishable by death..., by electric chair. His buddies would ensure there aren't any cables there...

I've used the Gautrain lots of times before and will continue using it because it is great and really makes life a lot easier.

@Tizozo and at the other @Tizozo, i absolutely agree with that its a good idea, tho hopefully with the decresed pricing they don't drop security within the trains, at night. Maybe we could start a petition or something, there are ideas out there, lets make them a reality.

High unemployment - theft of expensive cables down time etc. but no security to prevent further theft. Sounds like a solution is just waiting to be discovered to solve 2 problems.
