Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela’s widow Graça Machel reached out to those less fortunate by packaging enough food to feed a child threatened by hunger three meals a week for a year.

People in South and the rest of the world celebrated "Mandela Day" on Friday for the first time since the iconic South African leader's death by doing good deeds on what would have been his 96th birthday.

“Wherever Madiba is today, you can be sure he's smiling,” said Machel.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Deputy Minister Nomaindia Mfeketo and members of the diplomatic community will contribute their 67 minutes by taking part in the clean-up of the City of Tshwane’s Bloed Street Taxi Rank.

The cleaning is to honour Madiba’s memory by beautifying their surroundings as part of the campaign to promote a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for all.

Musician Loyiso Bala joined the Afrika Tikkun team on Friday morning in building shacks for families in need in Diepsloot. He will also be addressing the youth on following their goals.

Methodists from around Gauteng are joining their Presiding-Bishop in putting some sweat behind their convictions in service-delivery protest hit Bekkersdal on Mandela Day.

Supporting Mandela's vision to transform our nation through education, the Methodists will back up their many education initiatives with a significant act of service at Simunye High School in Bekkersdal. Mandela himself was educated at a Methodist School.

Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu visits Cosmo City as part of Mandela Campaign where together with her department employees will clean the area.
