Johannesburg - The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) have arrested one of their own for allegedly defeating the ends of justice.

In a statement on Thursday, spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, said members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Unit in Germiston had on Wednesday arrested Sergeant Leonard Mathonsi, 38.

"It is alleged that in February 2017, a case dockets inspection was conducted and it emerged that Sgt Mathonsi did not sign or affirm his statement as the complainant on one of the drug related cases registered in October 2015. His commanders requested him to furnish them with his signature, instead he denied writing the statement and tore it.

"However, the suspects on that drug related case were released and the case was then withdrawn from court due to lack of evidence. Warrant of arrest was issued for Sgt Mathonsi to be arrested for contravening Schedule 1 of the Criminal Procedure Act, Act 51 of 1977."

Mathonsi appeared briefly before the Germiston Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning on charges of defeating the ends of justice. The case was postponed to July 26 for further investigation and he was released on a warning.
