Johannesburg - The Gauteng health department apologised on Wednesday to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic hospital, in Soweto, for a power outage.

The electricity supply to the hospital was cut on Tuesday between 2am and 10am, when cables providing power to the facility were stolen, department spokesman Simon Zwane said.

The outage caused the postponement of some operations. Two of the hospital's 12 generators experienced problems on the day, which affected the functioning of theatres.

The hospital was functioning at full capacity again as the power was restored the same day.

“The department is currently establishing if there was any dereliction of duty by anyone in order to take appropriate action,” Zwane said.

The department was putting in place additional measures, such as a plan to deal with operations during power outages.
