A Johannesburg man has been fined R20,000 or 18 months in jail, for running over an 11-year-old boy and fleeing the scene, Beeld reported on Saturday.
Jonathan Davis, 65, from Bryanston, was found guilty of offences including reckless driving and not stopping at the scene of an accident when he appeared in the Benoni District Court on Friday. His jail sentence was suspended for five years.
According to his statement he admitted to driving recklessly on the N12 on March 22 near Snake Road. He struck a boy who ran out from between the cars. He stopped but then drove off due to “shock and trauma”.
Joshua O'Callaghan, 11, and his grandfather, Lee Acorn, were attacked while they were fishing at the Kleinfontein dam in Benoni.
The boy ran away from the robbers and was trying to flag down cars on the highway when he was struck by Davis.
He sustained severe lacerations, bruising, and a broken leg.
Magistrate Nerissa Naidoo took into account that Davis apologised to the boy and his parents and paid R25 000 towards his medical expenses. - Sapa
