Pretoria - National flag and ANC colours painted the streets of Pretoria as hundreds marched to the Union Buildings to commemorate Women's Day on Saturday morning.

They were led by Gauteng Premier David Makhura as well as City of Tshwane and provincial government officials.

The majority of participants were women, including senior citizens.

The route was closed to traffic as marches honoured the women of historic 1956 march who were protesting against the unjust laws of the then apartheid government.

Among the marchers were members of the ANC Women's League, carrying a huge banner with the theme of this year's celebration.

The theme is "20 years of democracy: moving women's agenda forward, through socio-economic transformation".

Along the road, onlookers waved in support, while others sang praises for Nelson Mandela.

Informal traders seized the opportunity to sell memorabilia of the ANC, including T-shirts bearing Mandela's photo.

The procession ended at the South Lawns, Union Buildings, where Makhura delivered a keynote address.

Members of the SAPS and Pretoria Central community policing were also in attendance.

There were performances by various music and cultural groups.
