The Gauteng Department of Education will convene an urgent meeting with the school governing body (SGB) of Sandringham High School following claims that some of the schoolteachers have been paid with IOUs.

Its intervention has come after The Star highlighted allegations of financial mismanagement at the school.

Several allegations of mismanagement have been made against the school and resulted in the suspension of the principal, Logan Naidoo, in March pending the outcome of a forensic audit.

Naidoo was suspended on allegations of soliciting bribes from parents in exchange for admitting their children to the school and blackmailing a textbook publisher.

Last week, 12 staff members were retrenched and told they would receive their July salaries when the school “had enough money”.

The SGB teachers have also had money from their last four months of pay deducted from their pensions.

The SGB said this was done in order to keep paying salaries as the school had no other funds available, but said it would repay the pension funds by the end of August.

On Wednesday, the department issued a statement noting the “reports on the finances of Sandringham High School”.

It went on to say that the head of the department, Boy Ngobeni, was convening an urgent meeting with the school’s SGB on Monday.

The forensic audit was launched into the school’s finances in early March, but, to date, the results have not been released.

The Star first asked department spokesman Charles Phahlane for the results of the audit on June 1 but has still not received any details, or reasons for the delay.

The department confirmed again on Tuesday that the report was being “finalised”, despite being asked to provide a specific time frame for the completion of the audit.
