Johannesburg - She is the crown jewel of Africa, attracting millions of people from the continent and across the globe with her array of unique opportunities and lifestyle.

Her development and history is portrayed through her myriad historic sites and tourist venues. And to many, she remains the heartbeat and melting pot of Africa because she typifies South Africa, and the continent’s competitive spirit.

On Tuesday, Joburg reached another milestone when she celebrated her 130th birthday.

It was on October 4, 1886, that the city was born as a small mining town, following the discovery of gold.

To celebrate the City of Gold’s milestone and rich heritage, a small group of people converged at MuseuMAfricA in Newtown. Among them was new Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba and DA councillor Nhlanhla Sifumba, as well as 80 young Joburgers.

In his address, Mashaba dedicated his administration to the betterment of the future generation as represented by the youngsters who sat before him.

“When Joburg works, the country works. So the choices we make today will contribute to the legacy of the future generations,” he said.

“We need to work together in ensuring our city is a place for greater opportunities for all, in particular this youth.

“Very soon we will be announcing aggressive plans to take back the city from criminal elements. The August 3 municipal elections brought in a new milestone in our country, the break of a new dawn, particularly our city.”

Mashaba also vowed to preserve historic Joburg buildings such as MuseuMAfricA, where they stood.

The mayor and other dignitaries were ushered in to a section of the museum called Joburg Firsts, which showcased the first traffic light, first matric examination paper and the chair gifted to the first mayor of Joburg City.

Some people took to social media to share their birthday wishes for the city.

Among them was @medicineman22, who tweeted:”Happy birthday, Joburg, 130 years old today. Joburg was officially recognised on October 4, 1886.”

On Instagram, @pastexperiences said:”Happy Birthday, Joburg, 130 crazy years!”
