The father of the late Bafana Bafana soccer player Senzo Meyiwa met with Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza this week after it was announced that the R4 million life policy on the murdered goalkeeper would be paid out.
In the terms of the policy half of the amount will be paid to the club and half will be divided among Meyiwa’s three children, including his daughter, Thingo, whom he fathered with singer Kelly Khumalo.
Meyiwa said he was relieved, but could not say how much he expected because the fund was monitored independently.
He told The Sunday Tribune that he planned to bring his son’s spirit home through a traditional ritual, and that once the money had been finally paid into his account he would slaughter a cow.
“This is long overdue and it is necessary that it is done properly. Hopefully, by next month family and friends will be invited to the ritual.
“Since the news broke I have been receiving calls from close and distant family members wishing me well. Even at malls people stop and congratulate me,” Meyiwa said.
However, Meyiwa refused to say whether Kelly Khumalo would be invited to attend the ritual, but added that Senzo’s customary wife Mandisa was also relieved by the announcement.
He said that he was still unhappy because his son’s killer was still at large but his faith had been renewed since the police promised him they were following new leads.
“I am expecting a visit from the team of investigators to advise me on the latest developments. I think they are working hard to arrest the killer,” he said.
Abuse
Khumalo doesn’t want any money from the insurance payout, according to a friend.
“Kelly has taken so much abuse from everyone since the birth of her daughter, she doesn’t want anyone or anything.
“She doesn’t know anything about that insurance payout because nobody has contacted her.
“She took it upon herself to raise her kids and provide for her mother, she has no interest in that insurance,” said the friend, who added that Kelly was also not interested in making any contact with the Meyiwas.
“His family can keep talking about her but she is also not interested in anything that has to do with the Meyiwa family, she is hurt.
“They need to give her a break, and she has taken so much abuse. All she does is bury herself in work and look after her children,” she said.
Kelly was not available for comment and Mandisa Mkhize also refused to comment.
