Krugersdorp - Staff at the Yusuf Dadoo Hospital in Krugersdorp are protesting against alleged corruption and equipment shortages, the DA said on Sunday.
Staff, including doctors and nurses, had held lunchtime pickets throughout last week, said Democratic Alliance Gauteng health spokesman Jack Bloom.
“(Their) grievances include incompetent managers; a broken switchboard that keeps dropping calls; (and) patients sometimes sleep(ing) on the floor because of a bed shortage,” Bloom said in a statement.
A contractor had also apparently failed to complete the building of the nurses residence, and an electronic information board had been left unfinished, he said.
Bloom called for urgent intervention by the province's health department, which, he claimed, had been slow to address the problems.
The Gauteng health department could not be reached for comment, and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union could not confirm that its members were among the protesters.
