Johannesburg -

Premier David Makhura pledged to be the servant of the people of Gauteng during a brief address at the Grace Bible Church in Pimville, Soweto, on Sunday morning.

Makhura's address and subsequent prayer for him and his administration by Bishop Mosa Sono, founder and senior pastor of Grace Bible Church, were beamed live to other branches of the church across the country.

“I hereby pledge that we will continue to humble ourselves before our people,” Makhura told thousands of worshippers.

Makhura, who was elected premier after the May 7 general elections, praised churches for their wonderful church ensuring peace and stability among communities.

“Pray for us as we lead,” said Makhura.

He was accompanied by his wife Mpho, advisors Eric Xayiya and Mduduzi Mbada, as well as other officials from the office of the premier.

The premier asked for the church to pray for President Jacob Zuma, who was spending a second day in a Pretoria hospital after being admitted for apparent medical tests.

Zuma was ordered by the ANC to rest after what they call a gruelling election and was fatigued.

However, doctors were satisfied with his condition, according to the presidency.

Makhuka also paid tribute to Epainette Mbeki, former president Thabo Mbeki's mother, who died on Saturday.

Ma Mbeki died in the Life St Dominic's Hospital in Eastern Cape at the age of 98, having suffered from a heart problem and chest infection since late May.

Sono then led the congregation in praying for the premier and his cabinet.
