ANC Youth League president Julius Malema demanded that only a member of the Cabinet accept their memorandum on “economic freedom” at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday.
To loud cheers he said: “We don't want a DG (director-general). We didn't vote for a DG but a politician. If you are not a minister don't waste our time.”
Malema said if a minister did not accept the memorandum, marchers would go back home and come back another time.
This led to a roar of “no, no, no,” from the crowd.
It was not immediately clear who would accept the memorandum.
Malema accused the police of “being dramatic” with their heavy presence.
“You don't need task force protection. These are peaceful protesters.”
At the Union Buildings a song leader sang “Kgalema's my president”, referring to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.
Some of the placards carried read: “Black on black apartheid”, “greed-based corruption” and “yes we don't want Zuma and Gwede”, referring to President Jacob Zuma and ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe.
Supporters of the march travelled mostly on foot from Johannesburg on Thursday to create awareness of their economic needs and high unemployment rate.
Malema led from the front, walking most of the 50-kilometre trip, barring a few breaks on a truck.
He handed over a memorandum of grievances to the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg's city centre on Thursday, before marching to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton.
The walk from Sandton to Tshwane, along the R101 Old Pretoria Road, took eight hours. - Sapa

@Anonymous 11:18 -Who are these sensitive investors really? What good is their investment when masses of our people are still living in poverty...is the whole country supposed to bend over backwards just so a handful of people can drive ferraris on sundays.I am tired of that line and just like inequalities it need to be shown the door.

Lasly, which world are you talking about? This people are marching peacefully. The world that you are talking about killed Gadaff (NATO). USA,UK, etc are murderous.

Anonymous @ 11:18am. Perhaps you'd prefer that these people rioted instead? What else can they do to create awareness of their plight? It's not about Malema (who I believe is exploiting these people for his own political future). It's about millions of men and women who have little or no hope of ever finding work marching against their fat, greedy leaders who think nothing of blowing R000,000s on cars, houses and overseas accommodation while their constituants struggle to survive on nothing. The fact that racist Malema is involved is very unfortunate - but the truth of the matter remains that you'd do nothing less if you had no chance of work.

Geez , surely zuma is going to do something about the insolence and out and out disrespect shown towards him by the youth of the party he leads? At any rate , Malema failed to mobilise the masses he thinks support him , get rid of him , expell him and marginalise him. If the ANC think 5000 ppl is a show of force , they stupid.
