Johannesburg - A man was rescued shortly after 8am on Friday morning after a fire destroyed one floor in an office building in Braamfontein, Johannesburg emergency services said.

"We just rescued one male who was trapped inside the building on the 25th floor and we will be transporting him to Milpark Hospital," Johannesburg emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said at 8.15am.

"He was the only person trapped inside. Right now the fire is extinguished but we are damping down and extinguishing the hotspots. We are still on the scene and checking the floors to make sure whether the building is safe for use."

He said the man would be assessed at the hospital.

Earlier, Mulaudzi said the whole sixth floor was destroyed when the fire broke out after 2am.

"The investigating team will start finding out whether the building is safe for usage and what had caused the fire," he said.

The 25-storey building is on Smit Street.

Johannesburg metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said traffic was being diverted into Harrison Street.

"Smit Street has been closed off, motorists can use Harrison, Bree, or Jorissen streets as alternative routes," Minnaar said.. -Sapa
