Johannesburg - It cost the crime intelligence unit R5 million to employ Lt-Gen Richard Mdluli's family members and supply them with luxury cars, according to a report on Sunday.
Seven of Mdluli's relatives were registered as secret agents less than a year after his appointment to head the unit in 2009, City Press reported.
According to a document in the newspaper's possession the cars were part of fleet of luxury vehicles bought for more than R47
million over the past five years by the crime intelligence front company.
The documents included affidavits by two senior Hawks investigators, Colonel Kobus Roelofse and Lt-Col Piet Viljoen, who were probing Mdluli and the crime intelligence secret service account.
According to City Press the affidavits describe how Mdluli had use of seven crime intelligence vehicles Ä an Audi, three Mercedes Benzes, a BMW, a Jeep and a Lexus. Some of the cars were illegally registered in Mdluli's wife's name.
According to the investigators Mdluli's seven family members, who were secret agents, did little at crime intelligence. In the 18 months since their appointment in 2010 they cost the state more than R5 million in salaries and other expenses.
The affidavits also detail how the state was allegedly defrauded by tens of thousands of rands. In one transaction Mdluli's seven-series BMW was traded in for a five-series model, resulting in a shortfall of R90,526.
In Parliament earlier this week acting national police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi hinted that the Hawks' probe into the “looting” of a crime intelligence “slush fund” may not necessarily be over. He said he was considering instituting disciplinary steps against police officers mentioned in Hawks' statements. - Sapa
