Johannesburg - The number of flowers, placards, candles, messages, and paintings left outside former president Nelson Mandela's home in Houghton, Johannesburg, has increased since the weekend.
Flowers and keepsakes placed across the road near the driveway formed an impassable barrier over a metre high.
Under the watchful eve of the police, hundreds of people took photos, left even more flowers and chatted among themselves in the leafy Johannesburg suburb on Monday.
Roads were cordoned off a block in all directions around the house, and all cars and people were being directed to approach the house from the east.
Traffic on Central street, 13th avenue, and Third street was backed up because of the diversion.
Apart from South Africans, there was a smattering of foreign visitors at the house, mainly foreign journalists.
Street traders lined the road leading to the house, selling paintings, clothing, and other Mandela memorabilia.
At the nearby Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, people wrote messages in books of condolence outside. Others took time to look at the display inside.
Mandela died at his home in Houghton on Thursday night. He was 95. An official memorial service will be held at FNB Stadium, in Johannesburg, on Tuesday, and an official state funeral will take place in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday.
