Johannesburg - Three train carriages were set alight at the Mlamlankunzi railway station in Orlando East, Soweto, on Wednesday night, according to Johannesburg emergency services personnel.
“It is a deliberate fire, it was not by accident,” spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said.
The carriages were torched while the train was in motion.
Mulaudzi said no one was hurt and firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.
On Tuesday night, three carriages were also set on fire at the Merafe railway station in Soweto. No injuries were reported as a result.
“The carriages were totally, totally burnt out. It looks like they were set alight.”
It appeared that a commuter was responsible for the fire, Mulaudzi said. - Sapa
