Johannesburg - The woman whose waitress daughter was refused a tip agrees that life was better under apartheid - that's if the Facebook post she shared is anything to go by.

On April 25 last year, Ashleigh Schultz’s mother, Cheryl Grundlingh, shared a post from Quasiem Theron which supposedly showed the difference between life under apartheid and life in the new South Africa.

The first picture shows a clean and empty street decorated with street lights and a few old cars parked on the side. A picture of Hendrik Verwoerd is on the side with the words “The Devil” written under his picture. Just on top of the picture are the words: 1948-1989, 170 murders per year.

The second picture is of black people protesting and throwing rocks. A picture of a smiling Nelson Mandela is on the right-hand side of the picture with the words “A Saint” scribbled underneath it. Written on top of his picture are the words: Since 1994, 24 206 murders each year.

Grundlingh burst onto the scene last week when her daughter Ashleigh was refused a tip by Ntokozo Qwabe, who instead of tipping her allegedly wrote a note saying: “We will give tip when you return the land.”

He later said Ashleigh had burst into “typical white tears”.

On May 1, after the furore started, Grundlingh tweeted: “Think I’m going to bottle 'white tears' - sell it as AWB holy water.”

That, was however, not the only controversial social media post Grundlingh had written.

On March 13, she wrote: “Wondering which European country I'm supposed to return to, if chucked out of South Africa?”

While Ashleigh cried after being refused a tip, others pointed out her alleged hypocrisy regarding those less fortunate. A picture on her mother's Facebook page shows a pouting Ashleigh standing next to a door with the words: “No money, No food, Sorry.”

Under that is written: “Merry Christmas, Satan loves you.”

Some were infuriated by the post, with one person suggesting that while she was happy to accept money from other people, it was clear that she would not be willing to give money to beggars.

Attempts to get comment from both Ashleigh and her mother were not successful on Friday morning.
