Johannesburg - Gautrain is set to introduce a new ticketing system – the first step to achieving an integrated fare system – through which public transport users will be able to use one smartcard to access different modes of public transport.

This will include the Gautrain, its buses, bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Metrobuses, Metrorail and parking areas.

Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi said the aim was to make public transport more accessible, convenient and integrated.

“Gautrain’s ticketing enhancement will provide momentum towards achieving the objective of ‘one province – one ticket’,” he said.

In future, passengers with a contactless Gold Card will have the choice of topping up their cards online or with a mobile smartphone.

Users will also be able to access Gautrain services with local or international bank-issued, contactless credit and debit cards that are compliant with the Europay/MasterCard and Visa standard.

The upgrade will cover the entire Gautrain network, including train stations, buses and parking, and most of the recently implemented BRT ticketing systems will also be accepted by Gautrain services.

These changes will be implemented in phases, but should be fully operational in 2017
