Johannesburg - A taxi driver died and 16 others were injured when a taxi overturned after a collision with two other vehicles on Monday in Fourways, Johannesburg, reported paramedics.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said the accident occurred at the William Nicol and Wedgewood Link Road intersection. “Paramedics arrived on scene and found the taxi lying on its roof, leaning on the nearby pavement.”

Meiring said the paramedics discovered the taxi driver’s lifeless body next to the vehicle, he had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries.

He said a total of 16 people had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

“One of the moderately injured patients lay trapped inside the taxi,” Meiring said. “Fire services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the patient from the overturned taxi.”

Patients were treated on the scene and transported to nearby hospitals.
