Johannesburg - A man was badly burnt on the back of his hand when the roof of a plastics factory in Amalgam, Crown Mines, collapsed during a fire on Thursday, Johannesburg emergency management services said.

Spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said the man was treated on scene before being taken to hospital.

By 8pm the fire was mostly out and fire fighters were in the process of damping down the smouldering debris at the factory, which manufactured mattresses and plastic products.

Mulaudzi said emergency workers were still searching for anyone who may have been in the factory when it caught fire.
