Johannesburg - Saturday Star photographer Paballo Thekiso was named photographer of the year at the National Press Club’s awards evening on Thursday.

Thekiso won for a portfolio of work that included a photograph of the late Nelson Mandela’s coffin being driven to the Union Buildins for the lying in state.

Saturday Star editor Cecilia Russell said Thekiso brought excellence and visual brilliance to the paper every week.

At the same awards ceremony Mandela was honoured as the Newsmaker of the Year for last year.

A reporter from the Saturday Star’s sister paper The Star, Botho Molosankwe, won news journalist of the year, while the journalist of the year award was won by the late cameraman Dudley Saunders.
