Johannesburg - The electricity supply has been restored in Springs, east of Johannesburg, after residents endured a chilly weekend without power, the Ekurhuleni municipality said on Monday.

“We are happy to say as of 9pm (on Sunday), the power is back on,” spokesman Themba Gadebe said in a statement.

Several areas were left without power after cable thefts resulted in the collapse of an Eskom tower.

Residents endured the cold winter chill without electricity since Friday after the 132kV tower was vandalised.

The power cut also affected water supply in Selection Park, Geduld, Dal Fouche, Pollack Park, and Wright Park.

Gadebe said the two pump stations affected had been switched on but it would take some time to fill the reservoir feeding the affected areas.

Residents could expect the water supply to be restored on Monday afternoon.

In the interim, roving water tankers which the municipality had dispatched to provide water while the shortage lasted, would continue their rounds.

Meanwhile, power had also been restored in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, City Power said.

“Power was fully restored on Saturday evening,” spokesman Hloni Motloung said.

The outage was caused by theft of 88kV electricity pylons between the Nirvana and Nancefield substations on Thursday evening. - Sapa
