Motorists were urged to avoid the Pretoria central business district on Thursday morning as Tshwane Metro Police closed it off ahead of a memorial service for the late Albertina Sisulu.

Tshwane Metro spokeswoman Alta Fourie said police officers had started closing off streets shortly after 9am and they were expected to stay closed until 6pm. The memorial service, due to start at 2pm, was expected to draw large crowds including parliamentarians.

Sisulu, who was married to former ANC deputy president Walter Sisulu, died at her home in Linden in Johannesburg last Thursday at the age of 92.

Fourie said streets would be closed off at the following intersections: Visagie and Andries streets; Jacob Marais and Paul Kruger streets; Skinner and Paul Kruger streets; Visagie and Paul Kruger streets; Bosman and Visagie streets; Minnaar and Paul Kruger streets; and Minnaar and Bosman streets. – Sapa
