Pretoria - At just 17 and still a pupil with a year of school left, Pretoria-born songstress Abi Muller is on her way up after recording a ballad that will be released to world audiences next year.
Not afraid to admit her priority to her music career rather than studying toward a university degree eventually after completing matric, the young songbird recorded her debut offering Falling, an English version of a Chinese song, in Joburg last month.
The song will be released in the US, UK, Europe and South Africa but the pupil still faces the conundrum of completing and passing her Grade 11 exams at the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool.
Upon completion of the exams, Muller will record a song with acclaimed SA musician, PJ Powers, possibly next month, she said.
Asked how the chance to work with PJ Powers came about, she said: “I have no idea, they contacted me and my manager told me that I’ll be recording with her,” she said adding that the song would feature a British rapper too.
Muller who looks up to UK performer Adele, said she has been singing since she was 11 and has been taking singing lessons since.
“I used to stand in front of the mirror with a hairbrush in my hand, look at myself in the mirror and sing, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” she said during an interview at her Lynnwood home on Friday.
She said depending on the path her music career leads her, that she would enroll for a BComm after matric.
Asked what her dream was for her daughter, her mother Cornelia Scholtz said it would be for Muller to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. - Pretoria News Weekend
