Johannesburg - Traffic will be diverted at the National Stadium, Soweto, for the opening of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament on Saturday, Johannesburg metro police said.

The FNB Stadium would be known as the National Stadium for the duration of the Afcon tournament.

Chief-Supt Wayne Minnaar said on Thursday barricades would be put up along Nasrec Road and the Soweto Highway, between Mentz Street and the N1.

Rand Show Road, between Nasrec Road and Aerodrome Road, would also be closed off.

“Fans will not be allowed past the control point with their vehicles without a prepaid parking ticket, available from Computicket,” Minnaar said.

Drivers could leave their cars at park-and-ride facilities, at the corner of Pat Mbatha and Anderson streets in Westgate, and at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein.

The barricades would be erected at noon on Saturday and be removed at 2am on Sunday. - Sapa
