A man was shot dead when five men attacked two homes in Florauna Gardens, Pretoria North, police announced today.

A domestic worker arrived at a town house complex about 8am on Friday and told her employer about a suspicious-looking VW Golf that was parked outside, Captain Solly Marindi said.

When the house owner went outside, five men came into the yard and tied both of them up.

“The robbers told them to keep quiet as they were looking for the Chinese,” Marindi said.

The robbers took jewellery, a cellphone and then moved to another house in the same yard, Marindi said.

A 49-year-old Chinese man who was in the house with his three fellow countrymen died instantly after they kicked the door open and shot him. The three other occupants of the house were unharmed.

As the robbers fled, they hijacked a Mercedez-Benz at the gate, whose owner was visiting one of the robbed homes, said Marindi.

The car was later found abandoned several kilometres away from the complex.

Cases of murder, house robbery and hijacking had been opened. No arrests were made. -Sapa
